Hello Everyone, I would like to formally introduce my self as I was recently granted authorship. I am Liam, I live outside Boston and I am in high school. I have always been subconsciously reading OPPO on the side of Jalopnik, but I have gotten fully invested I this while trying to pay attention to boring physics lectures. I spend my summers on Nantucket working on a farm, which has its downsides but seeing Defenders and Series Rovers is great.
My car is a 1971 Land Rover Santana Series IIA 109, it is slow and sketchy. It is getting a bunch of work done to it now in preparation for the summer. I have my Learners Permit and get my JOL in July which is fortunate. The Rover is mostly getting things so it will pass inspection and safety items. It has the NA 2.25 diesel which produced 62hp new, but probably half that nowadays. It maybe has a top speed of 50 when going downhill. My Mom (She is a much better driver) is teaching me to drive a manual (She taught my Dad) which is quite fun and good excuse to go on long drives. That's all for now, feel free to ask me any questions!

try to write more concisely, superfluous language does not make you look smart. especially when you say you “subconsciously read” OPPO. You can’t read anything subconsciously.

how does a high schooler find himself a ‘71 Land Rover?
Also, welcome! Do you put your ketchup on your fries or on the side?

That yours pictured?

Welcome to the party! Great seeing new names and cars. That Santana is absolutely fantastic, I love it.
So for me: I’m Jack. I’m 16. I get my license in June. I have a TrailBlazer. Thankfully it’s going away soon, and will probably get replaced with a 300D. If you have any questions about anything hit me up.

Most Jalop high schooler ever? Welcome!

I’m still in high school. I have time to at least try and be half as cool.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 22:26 |

Well.... Your car may be slow, but at least it’s 4WD and looks absolutely amazing.

Welcome! Sweet car!
I’m looking at going to college in Waltham, so greetings potential future neighbor.

Welcome Liam. You definitely know what to say to become instantly popular on Oppo! Good with your license and with that Defender. Also, it’s cool you have a parent who is teaching you manual. It gives you the most options.

what makes you cool in high school has nothing to do with the rest of your life.

I was warned about this too, what’s the basement and am I in it?

My parents currently own 2 saabs and my moms first real car was a 900 5-speed. So I guess it runs in the family

![]() 03/20/2016 at 23:06 |

Yes! That was from the EBay listing, it will look very close to that when done.

Yep!

The day before thanksgiving my family was heading over to Nantucket on the car ferry, so ther was nothing better to do than look at EBay for 2 hours, came across this gem. We weren’t really looking for another car, but myself and he really always liked them so Black Friday we hopped on a plane to Richmond and bought the car from the same people Doug bought his GTR from.
Depends if you have a fork or not

Those are usually the kids that think buying a 2005 Range Rover with 200k miles is a good idea

One of my friends dad had a sweet 99 E300 diesel with a E55 body kit. It was a really fun car, but needed a bunch of work.

Nice, think I’ve seen more pictures of it on Valencia Classics.

I was adamant on getting a manual, I really wanted a Miata but looking back it doesn't seem that reasonable.

Bentley or Brandeis?
![]() 03/20/2016 at 23:20 |

They were great to work with and have had pretty good cars for cheap

Thanks, can't wait to take it racing!

You mean the one with the flickering light and creaking stairs?
![]() 03/20/2016 at 23:22 |

You’re off to a great start. The Miata will come.

I found it pretty cozy, the sofa was extra nice. I think someone must have spilled their red Kool Aid on it, there is a big stick red spot on it.

![]() 03/20/2016 at 23:39 |

Pretty cool!
![]() 03/20/2016 at 23:40 |

Got waitlisted at Babson, so that’s probably out. I’m looking at Hamline, Butler, Drake, U of the Pacific, McKendree, and of course Bentley.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 23:46 |

Thats a pretty solid list
![]() 03/20/2016 at 23:48 |

Another bonus is it seats 11-legally and probably about 15 “legally”

Sounds like a party!

all jokes aside, really cool rover, glad to have ya here
![]() 03/21/2016 at 06:35 |

I’m looking at a 1985 W123. It’s much older, but it does have a car phone so it’s pretty much a done deal
![]() 03/21/2016 at 07:42 |
|
There are a lot of beach parties in its future. We also are putting a ARB awning onto the hardtop.
![]() 03/21/2016 at 07:47 |
|
I love the W123's, they will run forever. In the future if we sell our Expedition, then the Land Rover would get an engine swap. The biggest contenders ar a LS, 300 TDI, and the OM617. Which body style are you looking at?
![]() 03/21/2016 at 07:49 |
|
My vote is on the 300TDI, completely unkillable. I’m looking at a standard sedan or a cheap coupe if I can find one around here.
![]() 03/21/2016 at 08:03 |
|
Yes with that and the OM617 we won’t need to do much in terms of safety and other upgrades, but with the the LS it will need a upgraded drivetrain and more safety features. The LS is one of those engines where every mechanic knows how to work on them, where the other would confuse them. The mechanics on Nantucket are pretty shit at their job anyways.
I think the coupes are always a great looking car, and could return a higher resale value.

I’m going to cry.

yesssss
![]() 03/21/2016 at 10:38 |

I will probably do either rally cross or auto cross, because they probably won't allow it on the drag strip
![]() 03/21/2016 at 10:40 |

You’re a real
![]() 03/21/2016 at 14:14 |

And right now they’re super cheap.
![]() 03/23/2016 at 14:32 |

Welcome! You are clearly more Jalop than I could have hoped to be at your age...
![]() 03/23/2016 at 16:44 |

Well thank you

My flathead six says it made 78hp, but most are in the 60s now. My friend shaved a Chrysler sedan head and did some other work on it, it’s a bit peppier now. If I want to work on the engine I am lucky in that there are a couple hot rod guys that make stuff for 230 flatheads, they make a larger weber adapter and dual exhaust 6 into 2 manifolds. But I will probably just do some head work at some point and maybe the carb, he said he back cut his valves a bit too. I am doing what you are, getting it ready for a CA inspection, my friend is painting it and getting some details done so I can just use it and not worry about anything. The previous owner did a bunch of stuff over the eight years he owned it. I am swapping the gears to 4.89 and rebuilding the steering knuckles with bearings instead of battle ready brass cones. How much does yours weight, hard to steer at all? Mine is tough to steer unless moving, they make a power steering kit but I’m going to see how the bearing do. This thing without the PTO winch is still over 5k lbs I think.
![]() 03/14/2018 at 13:37 |
|
That should be cool, I might get the bimini/bikini top and just leave it for the summer like that, maybe throw a tarp around in case of a windy shower, or get a guy I know to make a custom box shaped cover for the open cab. We have a big sewing machine my mother gave us so I might try to make on and get an eyelet tool. I think these seat ten people in back if you get the troop benches that fold up in the back, and they have the bows and canvas cover for the back. They make all the reproduction stuff for that.
![]() 03/14/2018 at 22:32 |

Mine weighs around 3300 pounds, but most of the weight is over the front axle. Mine is fine steering around, it has wider tires than stock too. The only annoying thing is trying to maneuver around small parking lots because of the very large turning radius, it just turns into the circus especially since it makes huge exhaust clouds.
![]() 03/14/2018 at 22:42 |
|
Since then I’ve had the soft top on since this past May, and it’s been great. It was on and off for most of the summer, and the sides were rolled up into December. It does well in the snow and it leaks less than the hardtop, but the door and roof fitment aren’t perfect. With the seats, It can seat 11 with seat belts, but since it never originally came with seat belts, that number is infinite.
![]() 03/14/2018 at 23:38 |

The 37" tires are tough in a parking lot, when we messed around with it the first time I went into a lot and turned around. I’m hoping the knuckle rebuild improves it quite a bit. Everything is gigantic on this thing, there are 2.5 lbs of grease in each side.

Going down the sagamore bridge I just put it in neutral and hold on for dear life.

I always recommend brake upgrades, I like original stuff but if someone makes better brakes I get them. Someone I know has non power disks up front on his M37 and they are much better than the drums. I’ll keep drums in the rear since they only do 30% anyway.
